"Scale" is a versatile word. We can scale rocks. Fish have scales. I love to catch and eat fish. There are music scales. We all enjoy music. Don't forget the bathroom scale. Sadly, when I step on one of those I'm reminded of the Richter Scale numbers recorded when I'm walking. |

Today, we'll talk with Professor Ernie about some lesser known units of measurement. Let's start with the "light-year." A 'light-year" is a unit of time measuring how long somebody stays on their diet. In most cases, it's counted in small fractions. No, a light year is a unit of length equal to the distance light travels in a year, about six trillion miles. What about the "angstrom"? The "angstrom" is a measurement of anxiety levels! Incorrect again. It's another unit of length --- It's used to describe atomic-level distances. Here's one which isn't a unit of length. What does "foot-pound" measure? That's obvious. Kickboxer punches! |

Pythagorean Theorem. Named after the Greek mathematician Pythagoras, the theorem states that A2 + B2 = C2 in a right triangle where A and B are the lengths of the legs forming the right angle , and C is the length of the hypotenuse, the leg opposite the right angle. You may be right, Pythagoras --- But everybody will laugh if you call it a "hypotenuse"! |

The Expanding Universe. In 1929 astronomer Edwin Hubble studied light waves from distant galaxies and concluded that the universe is continuously expanding in all directions. This work was part of the basis for the "big bang" theory -- the idea that the expansion began from a single point with a huge explosion. Why is it the universe keeps expanding but there's never any room in my closet? |
