Caption: You know what I like best about being a dad? When my little boy curls up in my lap and falls asleep. I hold him tight and know he feels war and safe, and I feel like I can protect him from anything. Even from time. Because as long as he lives, he'll be able to close his eyes and remember this feeling and be two years old again ... hopefully without the wetting himself part. It's important to know when you stop talking.

Caption: Do you remember your early childhood, Randy? Of course, little buddy. I come from a long line of Randies who have photographic memories. It's an evolutionary trait that enabled early Randies to survive despite being connoisseurs of the female form. "Evolution"? Doesn't that mean some of them didn't make it? Overly long stares lead to nothing but trouble.

Caption: I'm proud of you, Mort. It's been a month and you haven't once freaked out a bout Donald Trump winning the election. That's because I made a pilgrimage to a fog-shrouded castle atop a mountain in Foreignvania. There, a renegade mystic performed an incantation that reboots my memory to November 7, 2016 every time someone mentions Trump. I'm not sure that's a good long-term coping mechanism. Rebooting! ... Hey ... don't forget to vote tomorrow, Randy.

Caption: I'll admit, yesterday I was off my game. I made a rookie mistake and you bested me, nemesis. Caption: You know how I've been seeing a lady from Vancouver long-distance? Dr. Noodle. I'm finally going to see her again in person, in just two weeks!!! But now I'm terrified. The one time we were together in person, it was hot and steamy and magical. We tend to build things up in our memories, and reality can never live up to our memories. Try to temper expectations. Too late. She's already started calling me "Thor." Ph.D.

Caption: What were you doing during the Iraq war, Randy? What are you talking about? We knew each other back then. That was like 10 or 13 years ago. You can't expect me to remember every little detail about something that happened so long ago. I regularly delete old memory files to make room for all the new data constantly coming my way via Facebook, tweets, Instagram, etc. I wish I didn't have to do that. I wish I could just expand my storage by sticking a flash drive in my nose. Why don't you try? Maybe it'll work.

Caption: Mr. Fogarty, if you chose a single word to describe your long teaching career, what would it be? Ineffective. Ok, class, here's a poem I think you'll enjoy, called RING. Yeah! LUNCH! Stomp! Stomp! Stampede. Rumble. Rumble. "O Wonderful Youth."

Caption: Do you want your impact on this world to outlast you? In the end, we either turn into a long-remembered story, or we fade away. If you could have people say just one thing about you at your funeral … What would it be? "Hey! Look! He's breathing!" Good talk, Clyde. Thug 4 Life. (Originally published on 9/28/10).

Caption: Rosencrantz? What's the first thing you remember? I remember being born. That's impossible. No, ever since I was an infant, I've remembered being born. The prefrontal cortex, which encodes explicit memory, is not active at birth. And the hippocampus is too small to transfer experience into long-term storage until age three. You don't remember being born. You just remember remembering being born. Forget it.

Caption: I think having an active imagination is a good thing, Lemont. Translation: you never believe a word I say. Like when we were kids, you told me you were part of something called "The Corps," and at night you were searching for "The Lost King" in order to save something you called "The Dreamverse." What? How do you remember that? I don't even remember that. H ... how long have you been writing a diary for me? Lemont's Diary. Vol. DLXXIX. I've obviously forgotten that when we were kids, I told Susan I had an awful memory.

Caption: It's all coming back to me, Doc. I was reporting on the Mexican drug cartels … then it all went wrong. I got kidnapped. I ignored warnings. I made a mistake. AND THE WORLD ENDED. Lemont? We're still here. If the world ended, how can that be? How can the sky glow after the sun as already set? How can smoke rise after the candle has already gone out? Yes, yes ... how can my tongue still taste all aluminum-y long after I finish the diet cola ... Leave the poetry to your patients.

Caption: My wife has started using sea salt instead of regular table salt. She says it tastes better. I say salt is salt. For as long as I can remember we've used regular table salt, now suddenly it’s not good enough anymore. Is that crazy or what? I prefer kosher salt myself. Although I also like Fleur De Sel and, on special occasions, Himalayan pink salt. Salt snob!
