81. Comic Strip Darrin Bell Rudy Park 2015-04-13 job
Cartoonist(s): Darrin Bell
Comic/Cartoon: Rudy Park

Caption: Hey boss, it's April 13th. A couple years ago, you said come back April 13, 2015, and we could talk about you giving me a raise. Yes, but that was predicated on the notion that you'd need a raise by now. I see you're still alive. Clearly you haven't starved to death. You smell minty-fresh, so clearly you haven't been forced out onto the streets. Karl Marx said it best: "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need." I'm pretty sure that is not what Marx meant.

Caption: Howdy pardner. Ummmm … What? You've never seen a handgun before? You want money? My iPhone? Don't hurt me. Relax, I'm just exercising my right to bear arms. Though it doesn't hurt when trying to get a little extra service or whipped cream. When did this job get so dangerous?

Caption: I'm unpoor! You're what? You're looking at an employed man. After seven years of unemployment, I just got a job at Walmart. It pays slightly more than minimum wage. Congrats. The first thing I'm going to do with my new-found wealth is buy a new pair of undies. I haven't bought a new pair of undies since 2007. The second thing I'll do is pay down the interest on the principal on one of my credit cards. America is back, baby!

Caption: Boss, I'm one of the finalists for Mars One! I'll be going to Mars on a one-way trip. Excellent. On Mars, you'll have only the air and food you bring with you. That won't last long. To survive long-term you'll have to plant vast gardens to feed you and replenish your oxygen. You'll be toiling and slaving for no money at all. I should never tell you anything. I'll stop paying you, to help you get used to that.

Caption: Boss, I'm more than just a cashier and a mopper-upper guy. What? If only you'll give me more of a decision-making role, you'll find that I've got a lot of good ideas. Such as? I, uh … didn't really expect you to ask me right now. I sense a cash register that needs mopping.

Caption: Boss … I need to take a few months off for paternity leave. That's commendable. I'm all for fathers taking an active role in their children's lives. It's good for the health of our economy. Take all the time you need, as long as the "baby" you're talking about isn't a kitten, a houseplant or some video game where you raise a simulation of a baby. I'd like to withdraw my request. I thought you might, minion.

Caption: Armstrong, I've worked here for a long time and I think I deserve a raise. How about it? I'll give you an Indian Ocean raise, minion. How does an Indian Ocean raise of $2 an hour sound? Fun fact: The Indiana Ocean's on the opposite side of the world, so its "up" is our "down." I don't think that's how "up" works, boss. "Relativity" is just a theory.

Caption: To be an alpha male, little buddy, you've got to live like you've got nothing left to lose. I don't know, Randy. How could I just stop worrying about losing my dream job, or losing my life savings, or losing my looks ... or losing the respect of other men and the respect and adoration of the ladies? Good news and bad. Good: If you've never had any of that stuff, you can skip right to the "nothing left to lose" part. Ok ... and the bad?

Caption: Boss, give it to me straight: do I have room for growth here? Of course. If you apply yourself, and try hard every day to eat as much as you can … you can gain another 30 or 40 pounds in no time. Of course, then I'd have to drop your health insurance. You'd be a high risk for heart attack or diabetes. Let me rephrase: Do I have room for advancement? Of course. There's at least another 3 or 4 feet between you and my desk.

Caption: It's been a banner year for you, Rudy, and I'm glad I was part of it. What do you mean? In January, you almost quit to go find a better job. In February, Armstrong almost made you a partner in the café. In March, you almost started working out to get in shape for summer. In May, you almost finally started writing that novel you've always wanted to write. And through it all, I was there to taunt you and point out your shortcomings. I look forward to continuing our partnership in 2015! I almost thought of a really good comeback.

Caption: Boss, as you know, I've decided to become a republican. A step in the right direction. As such, I'm begging you, please … DO NOT RAISE MY WAGES!!! Giving me an extra $2 an hour will ruin me. Once I'm rolling in all that dough, I'll lose any incentive to get a better job. In fact, you'd be doing me a favor if you paid me even less. Ok. I'll cut your pay in half. Would half be enough? Wait! That was supposed to be reverse-psychology! Let me try again ...

Caption: You wanted to see me, boss? Rudy, did you realize it's illegal for a boss to tell his minion how to vote? Wink wink wink. … And that therefore, I would never tell you to vote for my friend, Patsy Marionette, for city council? Wink wink wink. I would never ORDER you to DONATE to Patsy's campaign fund either, as if your job depended on it. Wink wink wink wink wink wink wink wink wink wink wink wink wink. That's good to know. I believe we're on the same page here. Wink.

Caption: Come in, minion. What's up, boss? I'm writing a novel. It's a thriller about an intrepid café owner who discovers a map to the lost coffee bean of the ancients. The bean is hidden in crumbling catacombs beneath a booby-trapped Mayan temple. Braving an almost certain grizzly death ... ... the cafe owner sends his obsequious minion to liberate the bean. Wait ... what? But the story really gets going when the evil minion tries filing for workman's comp just because he loses a few toes. Can the brave owner have his government stooge dismiss the complaint before his insurance premium is affected? Stay tuned! I don't think I get one-percenter fiction, boss.

Caption: Caller, let me stop you right there. Your problem is you're a doormat! You need to march right back in there and tell him you don’t take orders from any man, and if he wants dinner he can fix it himself. You don’t think Denny's would fire me for that? NO FREE ADVERTISING!!! The Denny's at 9287 Bushmill Road, I mean.

Caption: What're you doing?! Your contract forbids you from watching "cute baby videos" on YouTube. Cute baby videos lead to employees wanting to have cute babies of their own. Having babies leads to employees asking for raises and time off. I don’t think everything in a contract is enforceable, boss. "Thinking" is forbidden by your contract.

Caption: Anyhow, thanks for listening, Rudy. It's part of the job. I guess you're right: the move to 3rd grade is a big one. There are lots of changes. You've just got to roll with it. And buy a new video game console? It eases any transition. How did you get to be so smart? Playing lots of video games.

Caption: … and we have to do half an hour of reading every night. Myles, can I ask you a question? What's really bugging you? Is it just the move to 3rd grade? Everything okay at home? Parents fighting? Are you worried they'll lose their jobs, or that someday you'll be saddled with debt, or that iPhone coverage will remain spotty? Huh? Are mom and dad okay? Are they losing their jobs?! You're missing the point. iPhone coverage is not improving!

Caption: … And to top it off, after school today, Ms. Jensen asked me what I want to be. Give me a break. House of Java .net cybercafe. No one knows what they want t be when they grow up. I was the rare exception. I knew someday I'd work at a high tech giant. Huh? She wanted to know what I wanted to be in some stupid fall play. She assigned me the singing cactus. Never, ever lie. But if anyone asks, I work at Apple.

Caption: Boss, I need to go home, I have an awful toothache. I can't focus. I can't concentrate. It's like someone's stabbing me in the face with a samurai sword. Oh, that's not that bad. Let me know when it feels more like a NINJA sword. I'm not sure there's a difference. Apparently you can focus just fine.

Caption: I need to take some bereavement time off. "Bereavement time"? Let me check … No, there's no such thing as "bereavement time" in your contract, Rudy. I'd love to give you time off to grieve but if I start allowing things that aren't in your contract, before we know it you'll be marrying your car. What car? I don't own a car. I believe my point still stands.
