1. Comic Strip Darrin Bell Candorville 2019-01-27 dissent
Cartoonist(s): Darrin Bell
Comic/Cartoon: Candorville
Viewable Date: 2019-01-27 Pub. Date: 2019-01-27
Image Number: 175735
Caption: Ever since the president announced he'd be pulling troops out of Syria, I've felt like some nefarious entity has put blinders on me. And I only see what they want me to see. Dr. Noodle. I spent all day channel-flipping between MSNBC, Fox and CNN … and reading all the usual newspapers ... and then it hit me ... I didn't read or hear a single voice saying we should not be militarily occupying other people's countries. It's as if the media's entire purpose is to pretend there is no dissenting opinion about our endless wars. Look what happened when Phil Donahue. He had the highest rated show on MSNBC. But as soon as he came out against invading Iraq, he disappeared! Anti-war voices in the media always disappear. That's a bit paran ... Hey ... where'd you ... ?

Caption: Society has forsaken nuance. Everything is either black or white now. No one admits that anyone else has a valid opinion. Don't you agree? Spare change? Will work 4 food. NO!

Caption: Lemont, how come you don’t ever disagree with me? You've always been 100% supportive of all my ideas, my style, my relationships … Sometimes I feel like your lack of dissent means you don’t care what I say or do. That's stupid. I disagree with you all the time. You're just saying that to make me feel better. (This cartoon was originally published on 2014-03-29).

4. Comic Strip Darrin Bell Candorville 2015-01-18 dissent
Cartoonist(s): Darrin Bell
Comic/Cartoon: Candorville

Caption: We haven't argued in a long time, Susan. Yes we have. It's been at least a year, Susan. No, it's been at most a year. Now you're just arguing for the sake of arguing. No, I'm not. I actually do disagree with you. No you don't. You're just saying the opposite of whatever I say. An honest disagreement has nuances. It has elements of agreement mixed in with the dissent. When someone just says the opposite of whatever you say, they're not making an argument -- They're just pushing buttons. They're just being a troll. No they're not. Stop that!!! ... Will you two just get a room already?!

Caption: What do you see, Murph? People, same as last week, Jules. Are they doing anything disloyal? That one's reading the news-paper. The comics page, I'd say. What strip? Blondie? The Oldersons? No. I can make out a few words, "President..." What else, Murph? What else does it say? I-M-P... "impeach." It says "impeach," Jules. Yes! Dissent! Sedition! Treason! We've caught another one reading disloyal America-hating, anti-troop, leftist TREASON! Oh, wait... it says "I'm peachy." Crud.

8. Comic Strip Nina Paley Nina's Adventures 1988-09-00 dissent
Cartoonist(s): Nina Paley
Comic/Cartoon: Nina's Adventures
Viewable Date: 2003-02-07 Pub. Date: 1988-09-00
Image Number: 2647
Caption: Hippies. Nina always had this beautiful image of what hippies were like…Organic food! Peace and love! Natural fiber clothing! Probably because she grew up in the 70s and 80s, when all the 60s hippies went underground and became romantic legends...Okay, class! Now we're going to play tackle football! A hippie wouldn't stand for this torture! Peace and love! I protest violent activities in P.E.! So when Nina moved to Santa Cruz, she expected there'd be all these hippies to match her romantic images. But it was not to be. Poof. Romantic ideals. There were grouchy hippies...Everyone's stupid. Nobody knows anything. Food poisons the body...And trendy hippies...Tie-Dye boutique. Hey Starbeam! Dig the energy of this t-shirt! Like it is so cosmic...And college-age deadhead neo-hippies. Burgers and fries!! Peace and love! Hash and beer! So it goes. What does "hippie" really mean, anyway?
