1. Comic Strip Darrin Bell Candorville 2017-11-07 civil war
Cartoonist(s): Darrin Bell
Comic/Cartoon: Candorville
Viewable Date: 2017-11-07 Pub. Date: 2017-11-07
Image Number: 164650
Caption: I'm tired of people complaining about how the president's chief of staff, John Kelly, said Robert E. Lee was an "honorable man." So what if Robert E. Lee was a cruel, slave-beating, family separating white supremacist traitor who even kidnapped free black Pennsylvanians and brought them to the south as property? John Kelly's right, we can't judge people from back then by what people today think is right and wrong. Y'know, a lot of people thought it was wrong "back then." That's why there was a war. I don't see what that has to do with anything.

Caption: The president's chief of staff, General John Kelly, was right: the Civil War happened 'cause the country did not compromise. Say what? Maybe they should've tried … oh, I don't know … splitting the difference and saying black people were worth 3/5ths of a person. Or maybe they should've admitted a slave state for every new free state admitted or maybe Lincoln should've just offered to limit slavery's expansion instead of ending it. Or maybe they should've passed some sort of "Fugitive Slave Act." I hate "Sarcasm Monday"! I'm glad the White House is filled with people who really know your history.

Caption: You ever think maybe the world would've been better off if we'd lost the Revolutionary War? Seriously? You gonna say that right before the Fourth of July? It's just a thought experiment. You scared of thought experiments? C-Dog ain't scared of nothin'. All right. Let's say France never helped us win the revolution. We'd have lost. Britain probably still would've freed the slaves in 1833, so ... No civil war. No backlash to reconstruction, so ... no KKK. France wouldn't have drowned in debt. Their monarchy would've lasted longer, so ... no Napoleon. No Napoleon, no threat uniting German nationalists, so ... no World War I or II ... no Hitler. No Manifest Destiny, so no genocide of Native Americans. The UK wouldn't have turned to the Middle East and Africa to replace its lost holdings, so ... no carving up the Ottoman Empire, no chaos in the Middle East, and no ISIS. Bruh ... if you don't wanna loan me $20 for fireworks, just say so. We'd probably still have black licorice. No getting around that.

Caption: Breaking news! The White House is urging Russia to intervene in the North Pole's civil war to secure the release of hostages held by elfin rebels. Click … Canadian homeowners are urged to check for bunny holes before mowing their laws, after a gruesome ... Click. After seven male senators in a row interrupted the witness' answers, Senator McCain scolded Sen. Kamala Harris for doing the exact same thing. Click. Gilligaaaan ... the Skipper tooooooo.

Cartoonist(s): Darrin Bell
Comic/Cartoon: Candorville

Caption: Sir, we're not going to be flying over the North Pole. But isn't that the fastest way to Russia? Yes, but as you may know, the North Pole is a totalitarian dictatorship embroiled in a bloody civil war between state forces and elfin rebels. I don't follow the news. Anyway, my ticket says we transfer to a connecting flight there. Didn't you guys already know about this war? That's not why we're avoiding it. Santa International just melted. @#$% global warming.

Comic/Cartoon: Candorville

Image Number: 144284
Caption: You want to know why I'm voting for Trump? Because I like the idea of him making America great again. Oh, me too. That way we could all build bomb shelters in our backyards. Women could wear corsets, and men could wear suits and fedoras all the time, even while jogging. BLM activist love of red velvet cake. Daily Nutjob. Hillary failed to stop Pearl Harbor. Goodnight Grandpa. Men could smoke and drink in the office like real men, and women could go back to doing whatever we say. Black war vets could be denied a lot of the benefits of the G.I. Bill and I wouldn't have to sit in the front of the bus anymore. Also confesses to having red "Little Red Riding Hood." Hillary rep'd NY on 9/11. Coincidence? Exoneration Nation. I once read that sarcasm is the lowest form of humor. I like the back of the bus. That way I could keep an eye our for all the Communists. Has aversion to pepper spray. Why? Hillary failed to stop destruction of Alderaan.

Caption: Hey, Clyde, did you hear? Donald Trump's supporters beat and kicked a "Black Lives Matter" activist, and Trump condoned it. It's not quite "Brownshirt" level stuff yet, but it's certainly unamerican. Whachoo talking' bout, Big L? Civil war … Jim Crow … Mexican-American War ... Indians ... out-of-control cops ... gangs ... domesticated violence ... Beatin' down people you ain't like is as American as it get, bruh. I'm talking about Constitution-America, not America-America.

Comic/Cartoon: Candorville
Viewable Date: 2015-11-30 Pub. Date: 2015-11-30
Image Number: 135923
Caption: I'm tired of people comparing Donald Trump to the fascist dictators of World War II. I mean sure, he still won't rule out forcing Muslims to register in a database. And sure, he condones it when his supporters beat and kick protesters. But what happened over there back then could NEVER happen here. Why couldn't it happen here? Because they were them and we're us.

Caption: When my momma was a kid, the really old folks she knew were Spanish-American war vets and veterans of the Civil War. When we were kids, the really old folks we knew were World War I veterans. Now, the really old folks out there are World War II and Korean War veterans. Vietnam vets are getting pretty gray, too. Kinda makes you think, right? It make me think we fight too many @#$% wars.

Caption: 1982. If you could be anyone in the whole wide world, who would it be? Anyone at all. I would be Harriet Tubman. Not only do I love railroads, but I'd get to be the hero who led the slaves out of Egypt. Only I'd have to be "Harry Tubman." That doesn't have the same ring to it. Dios mio. Or maybe I'd be Fonzie.

Comic/Cartoon: Candorville
Viewable Date: 2013-05-14 Pub. Date: 2013-05-14
Image Number: 96900
Caption: A 94-year-old World War II veteran visits Lemont's dream. This reminds me of the platform I stood on in 1941, waiting for the train to boot camp. A few white men surrounded me and said "sing a song for us." Uh-oh … What'd you say? I said "I don’t sing." Then they said "Well, dance for us." Do you know what I said? What'd you say, sir? "I don't dance." I tell you this not to complain ... But to tell you you draw lines in life. And you don't cross them. I don't draw.

Cartoonist(s): Darrin Bell
Comic/Cartoon: Candorville
Viewable Date: 2012-04-01 Pub. Date: 2012-04-01
Image Number: 77568
Caption: I'm tired of opportunists pretending there's some sort of "War on women." … Just because in the states, we're trying to de-fund Planned Parenthood, repeal equal pay enforcement acts, and force women to undergo unnecessary medical procedures. … And just because we're trying to make sure women can only have contraceptive coverage in their health insurance if their bosses decide they can. None of that has anything to do with women. It's all about freedom. Besides, if chicks has less nookie, they wouldn't have to pay so much for the pill. That's not how the pill works. I have a constitutional right to decide how the pills does and doesn't work.

Cartoonist(s): Darrin Bell
Comic/Cartoon: Candorville

Image Number: 65034
Caption: What were you thinking about when you went to bed on 9/11? I was praying to wake up the next day and it'd all just be a dream. What were you thinking about when you went to be on 9/11? I was hoping we'd rise to the occasion and honor the dead, the survivors, and the heroes ... by failing to rebuild the Twin Towers, by curtailing our own civil liberties, by calling each other "un-American," by torturing prisoners, mocking the French, invading the wrong country, and having our airports inspect kids' and old people's underpants. I like to have realistic hopes. I don't think sarcasm's allowed on 9/11 day.

Caption: Ok … What was the Civil War about, if not slavery? You don't really want to know; you're just patronizing me. Fine, don't tell me! Well since you asked … It was about people defending their homes against an oppressive, distant government. … That wanted to abolish slavery. Minor detail. YOU SEE WHAT I'M WORKING WITH?!

Caption: I'm tired of people comparing anti-gay laws to bigotry against Black folks. I mean, WE faced slavery and lynchings and beatings. Sure, gays have been beaten and killed for centuries, slaughtered in the Holocaust, and denied equal rights and everything, but that's just not the same. If it were all that bad, they'd have had their own miniseries by now. Say what? Where's the gay "Roots"? You just don't see it. Until I see the gay Kunta Kinte on my TV, I refuse to take any of this seriously.

Caption: In an alternate universe, the events of 1968 happen in 2008. America is outraged by Martin Luther King Jr., who recently said this… "We've committed more war crimes almost than any nation in the world but God has a way of even putting nations in their place. Wolf, I don't think it's fair to form an opinion of a man based on a 10-second clip. Well, in fairness, Mr. Abernathy... ...we've played that clip 9,000 times, so it's more like a 25-hour clip. What?

Caption: So I woke up from a 26-year coma and learned my Republican Party had been replaced by a big-spending, war-mongering, bill-of-rights-shredding leviathan. I started drinking to dull the pain. But I couldn't stop. The bottle took control. When it came time to vote, I hit bottom. You blacked out? I voted Democrat.

Caption: Dear Lemont Brown, I'm sorry for stealing your mail. I was searching it for WMDs al-Qaida may have sent you, sharp objects, chemicals, invites to anti-war demonstrations … Y'know, material harmful to the United Sates and the American people. When I found your Clay Aiken Christmas CD, I couldn't help myself. I stole it. I'm sorry. Here it is back ... except for track eight which was subversive. xoxo, Federal Agent Murph.

Caption: In other news, the White House continues to defend the President's recent "signing statement" authorizing himself to open your mail without a warrant if he says it's an emergency. We sent invitations to constitutional experts to discuss the matter on-air, but for some reason we've had no response. This just in: Britney Spears did not do anything stupid today.
