Caption: Online dating. Dinah, check out this guy. He's hot. Yeah, but it's not a recent picture … How can you tell? The Boyz II Men poster on the bathroom wall. Irony. Ouch!!

Caption: How many fights you think I been in in my life, Big L? I try not to think about it, Clyde. I figure as long as I don’t have statistics about the horrible details of your life, I can pretend you're actually a good person. Denial is a skill I began honing at an early age, when I first saw "Galactica 1980". If I could convince myself that show was good, I could convince myself of anything. No offense. I started a fight exactly ... For the love of god, man, don't ruin our friendship!

Caption: It was the 1980s. I'd hitched a ride to the desert sands of Iraq in search of adventure. There, in the ancient ruins of Nimrud, I saved a beautiful archaeologist from the reanimated mummy of an ancient Assyrian warrior. That, little buddy, led to Randy "The Rock" Taylor's very first roll in the hay. That's what made Nimrud famous? That, and some other stuff, I guess.

Caption: 1982. If you could be anyone in the whole wide world, who would it be? Anyone at all. I would be Harriet Tubman. Not only do I love railroads, but I'd get to be the hero who led the slaves out of Egypt. Only I'd have to be "Harry Tubman." That doesn't have the same ring to it. Dios mio. Or maybe I'd be Fonzie.

Caption: 1982. What'll life be like when we're 40? It'll be the 21st century, Susan. We'll have achieved all sorts of things. There won't be any poverty. Little kids won't have to go hungry. Russia won't be such a poopyhead. The Cold War will be over. We'll either all be friends because we're just so tired of being enemies, or we'll all be radioactive mutants. Either way, it'll be really cool. Momma says there won't be any more Vietnams because we learned our lesson ... Whatever that means.

Caption: Are you a "Star Wars" fan, good sir? Who isn't? I would like to propose a small wager. Ask me any question about Star Wars. Any question at all … and if I answer with 100% accuracy, I will win a free coffee and scone per day, for an entire year. Interesting. And what do I get if you answer wrong? You get this laptop computer. It's fully functional, except for a slight catastrophic logic board failure. Deal. Sucker. Here's the question: what was I wearing when I saw 'Empire Strikes Back' in the theater in 1980? Huh? What was I wearing, smart guy? Underpants. Ha! Nice try, but I always wore my Underoos OVER my pants!

Caption: What make you think I stole your Netflix password, Big L? My "recommended for you" section used to be stuff like "The Color Purple," "1984" and "The Godfather." But this morning it was "Soul Plane," "Bebe's Kids" and a documentary on "Gilligan's Island." I didn't steal no Netflix password, an' I'm offended at the accusation. Did you know Archie Bunker auditioned for the roll of "the Skipper"? I'm changing all my passwords.

Caption: I'm kind of disappointed in Apple's new smart watch. It's a rectangle. That's so 1980s. Watches are pretty much the only jewelry a hairy-chested man can get away with wearing without looking like he's in the mafia. This watch just doesn’t work as man jewelry. It's too old-fashioned. You know what I'm saying? You sayin' you wanna feel better about the fact you can't afford that watch.

Caption: 1982. You know how people always say "if aliens existed, why haven't they made contact?" Well, what if they have? What if WE aren't the ones they're coming to visit? There are at least six species on Earth that have a degree of intelligence. Nobody ever stops to think that the aliens may already have a mutual defense treaty with the octopuses. If you don't want to have sushi, just say "I don't want to have sushi." If the apocalypse happens, I just don't want anyone pointing fingers at me.

Caption: Yesterday some guy tried to tell me not all shootings at schools are "school shootings." He even said gang-related shootings don't count. What, that surprise you? What country you think you livin' in, Big L? They been shootings in "inner city" schools since the eighties. But America only started caring when white suburban kids started killing too. That's kind of cynical, Clyde. Columbine was the "Elvis" of school shootings.

Caption: I'm gonna call momma and see how she's doing. Tell yo momma C-Dog say "how they hangin'." Hey, momma. How're you doing? Clyde says hi. YOU'RE STILL HANGING AROUND WITH THAT DISRESPECTFUL, NEFARIOUS, GOOD-FOR-NOTHING, JHERI-CURLED LITTLE GOON?! Tell you momma she all wrong about me. I ain't had no Jheri curl since 1987.

Caption: In the eighties, Americans knew how to be Americans. Big cars. Big radios. Big hair. Everything was big. Unfortunately, I was so buff that all my huge stuff looked tiny in comparison. So I would loan my stuff to the skinniest, wimpiest kid I could find. Hold this. Let me reminisce vicariously through you. (Sigh.) Those were the days. Is it working?

Caption: April 20, 1986. Class, tomorrow we're going on a field trip. YAY!! To the civic center. BOO! To see a play. YAY! By Shakespeare. BOO!! Why can't I ever get my announcements to end on a "yay"? … And at the end of this school year, I am retiring from teaching. YAY!

Caption: Were you really supposed to be in the 1980 Olympics, Sadie? I DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT! But you're the one who brought it up. That was just to remind you there are aspects of my life that you don’t have clearance to know. Sorry … "clearance" is jargon from my time in THE SERVICE. Service? Which service? I don't want to talk about it.

Caption: Sadie, are you watching the Olympics? The Olympics are dead to me. The year was 1980. I had spent 50 years training for my moment in the sun. I'd sacrificed friends, family, wealth. I had become a tenth-level Scrabble Grand Master. To make it onto the team, I mercilessly destroyed every opponent that crossed my path, including one Rosalynn Carter. To this day, gullible people still believe we boycotted the Olympics because of some silly Soviet invasion. Randy, you watching the Olympics?

Caption: 1982. Do you want to see "E.T.," Lemont? Momma says we can't afford it. I could probably see "Porky's" though. Momma says that movie's "really cheap." But when I asked her about it, she like … totally flipped out. So thin I asked her if I could see "Tootsie." After all, I do love Tootsie Rolls, so ... She flipped out about that too. Said somethin' about "cross-dressing" being wrong. What's "cross-dressing"? I assume that has something to do with the civil rights movement. You mom never makes any sense, Lemont. When I'm a grown-up, I may have to have her committed.

Caption: 1982. Am I your best friend, Lemont. I guess so. I've known you almost my whole life! I like you more than ANYTHING, Susan. More than peanut butter? If I had to choose between you and peanut butter, I would never touch peanut butter again in life. More than birthday cake? If I had to choose between you and birthday cake, I would never touch birthday cake again in life. More than Star trek? If I had to choose between you and Knight Rider, I would never watch Knight Rider again in life. ... I said "Star trek." Don't push it lady.

Caption: Clyde, have you seen my vintage 1980's Flash Gordon tank top? Your WHAT? It was one of the last survivors of a more enlightened age …. … When real men weren't afraid to wear loose-fitting tank tops and bright, colorful booty shorts. I've been saving them all my life, for when that comes back in style. Ok, what goin' happen now is, you gonna back up about five feet ... ... An' I'm gonna forget this conversation ever happened. GIVE ME BACK MY BOOTY SHORTS!
